At Dream, we believe in building inclusive communities - meaning places where everyone can feel welcome to fully participate in social and economic life. We believe this should also extend to the people and businesses that build, maintain, and animate our communities. We support diverse businesses and jobs for under-served, vulnerable, and equity-deserving groups to help create more inclusive communities within and beyond our real estate through the following targets:

20% of the annual value of all contracts awarded to businesses that are majority owned or managed by an equity-deserving group by 2025

20% of the annual value of all contracts awarded to local, independent, and/or socially responsible businesses by 2025

20% of annual jobs created through capital and operating spending filled by individuals from an equity-deserving group by 2025

30% of all apprentice hours worked by individuals from an equity-deserving group by 2025

Bee-Clean is a building maintenance company that formed a partnership with Papasay Management Corporation (the economic development arm of the Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation) in 2015. Bee-Clean provides employment opportunities for First Nations community members throughout Canada (including in Dream buildings), as well as a recurring revenue stream to Papasay. In response to our Social Procurement Strategy, Bee-Clean utilized the joint venture to bid and win on a major cleaning contract for Dream Office. This in turn has directly contributed to the economic development of Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation.

Tracking Social Procurement Hours at 67 Richmond Redevelopment

As a family-owned business, BMK is accustomed to delivering exceptional service, which extends to its partnerships. BMK worked to help Dream unveil an industry-pioneering practice; tracking diversity within the labour hours of construction projects. By circulating voluntary diversity surveys to all on-site staff, subcontractors can now report the total labour and apprenticeship hours worked by their workforces monthly, as well as those worked by members of equity-seeking groups. BMK aggregates this information on its monthly invoices to Dream, fulfilling Dream’s newfound ability to track its employment related KPIs.

Training Day for Diverse Contractors

Dream’s Social Procurement Strategy aims to foster more supply chain competitiveness in addition to enriching the economic lives of the communities where we operate. As part of this, Dream launched a Training Program for Diverse Contractors with the goal of supporting early-stage contractors from equity-seeking groups that are looking to begin servicing commercial real estate. The Training Program consists of sessions and resources overviewing Dream’s supplier expectations, as well as site visits to solicit quotes to potentially award contracts to participating contractors.
